Meet The Muse: Annakim Violette
Aug 31st 2011, 13:30

Girl-about-town Natalie Joos spends her days casting for shows like ADAM and Yigal Azrouël and editorials for the likes of Mario Sorrenti and Mariano Vivanco, but her passion is vintage clothing. Joos’ blog, Tales of Endearment, spotlights Joos’ “Muses,” impeccably styled girls (and now, guys) who share her secondhand obsession. In a new partnership with Style.com, Tales of Endearment’s subjects will preview their shoots right here on Style File.

The word “eccentric” comes to mind when trying to describe Annakim Violette. It might be an accurate description, but it hardly feels original enough to describe a girl who compares her fashion sense to a vampire, counts Hello Kitty as a style inspiration, and signs off her e-mails with “Twinkle, twinkle, lil bat.” The daughter of rock legend Tom Petty, Annakim “changed her last name from Petty to Violette, simply because her favorite color is ultraviolet,” says Joos. She might have ditched the family name, but not the family business. Annakim, who lives in Silver Lake, recently finished her debut album (due out in October) with her band, Mircalla Glass, and she’s already in the studio working on new ballads. However, she will set things aside next month to head to the runways for New York fashion week, according to Joos. Here on Style.com, Annakim riffs on ponies, kitties, vampires, and Muppets—fashion inspirations all.

You have been working on music videos this week. Where are you shooting?
All over Los Angeles and a lot of it is underwater, which is beautiful. I had purple hair and no eyebrows, and I wore a vintage cape dress which got destroyed. I’m just finishing one album, and then I start one in October and one in November. I’m just getting used to recording so much music.

On the subject of fashion, I have read in previous articles that you don’t consider yourself a fashion person. Is that the case?
I find with fashion, women just seem like trolls or something and they spend so much money on labels and they have no taste, really. They are such horrible people sometimes…I really love when women have amazing taste and wear something a little strange.

That’s a good thing. What are your thoughts on L.A. fashion versus New York fashion?
New York is so uptight and it’s all about money. There’s people that are 19 that dress like they are 45. In L.A., you have a bunch of porn stars, a bunch of artists, and a bunch of burnouts, so you have a really colorful city. Now, it’s like a cross between Germany and Amsterdam now that weed is legal. The style and culture is just as intellectual as New York and I feel like it’s just as emotional, too. New York is so boring. I lived there for three years and I couldn’t stand how pretentious it got.

Who, then, do you think looks really cool in terms of the way they dress?
Frida Kahlo—she’s amazing. And Hello Kitty.

Are you focused on a particular era when you are shopping for vintage, or do you collect any kind of pieces in particular?
I’m really into texture. I think women are hypersensitive to their body type and I just want to wear some outfit that is going to make me feel like a Muppet. There’s a fine line, but I’m always attracted to color, or whatever weaknesses and strengths I have at the moment, I always like to rub salt on it.

I hear you especially like costumes…
Yes, I just got a rainbow Indian headdress from the 1930’s and it’s beautiful. It looks like My Little Pony, but from the thirties.

In a few words, how would you describe your style?
A vampire; I tend to change a lot.

So, are you into vampires?
It’s the only thing I have ever known. My privacy has always been invaded and I feel like I live in a world where people are stupid when it comes to social manners, and there is always a third party involved in the conversation in some way, but I do love them [vampires].

Do you watch vampire movies then?
I feel like my life is one long [vampire] movie. I haven’t watched as many movies lately and reading a lot of books instead. I really love Le Petit Prince.

What else do you like to do, when you aren’t making music videos and reading classic French tales?
My favorite thing to do right now is go get ice cream, go to the flower district, and then take the 10 all the way to Venice Beach. It’s like a morning stoner thing—it’s rad.
